Research Interests

The independent Tjwa Laboratory (initiated in Jan 2008) is associated with the Centre for Molecular Medicine (formerly Dept. of Molecular Cardiology), which is directed by Professor Stefanie Dimmeler (see also in About us). Our Lab studies, via a complex biology approach, the regulation of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) and cardio/vascular (stem/progenitor) cell fate. In particular, we investigate novel transcriptional, epigenetic, post-transcriptional and paracrine pathways, regulating the choice of HSCs to either undergo self-renewal or lineage commitment and differentiation, and how these pathways might contribute to leukemogenesis. In addition, in the context of angiogenesis and vascular biology research, we try to further unravel the (epi)genetic regulation of cardio/vascular (stem/progenitor) cells in response to tissue ischemia, inflammation, etc. These basic research studies are ultimately aimed at developing novel therapeutic targets for HSC expansion and transplantation, and the treatment of cardio/vascular diseases, leukemia and non-hematological malignancies.
